By far the most powerful application for word and other data processing is undoubtedly Microsoft Office. The only drawback in getting this suite is its costly price of more than $300.00 just for the standard edition and a whooping $400+ for Microsoft Office 2003 Professional. An upgrade from Standard to Professional costs $200+. With that in mind, many users have been seeking for a similar program for the fraction of its price. On the top spot for Microsoft office alternative is Openoffice 2.0.
Many other software developers have tried to develop something like Microsoft office suite but Openoffice is by far the most successful. In fact, this office suite if fully featured and most of all compatible with Microsoft’s suite, it’s almost like facing a mirror while using this great alternative. The reason for all reasons is its all free.
It looks and feels as if you are using the expensive software from MS but you get every bit for free. They have counterparts for word, excel and other programs in the suite. Just go to its website and download openoffice 2.0 setup and that’s basically it. Once you start using the suite the only thing you have to remember is its default saving extension, .odt for “Writer”. To be able to access the documents in an MS office working computer, you need to save it in compatibility mode, which is .doc for MS Word’s file extension.
